Dear Thurston County Commissioners:

You have shown leadership, common sense, and courage in implementing a moratorium on the permitting of biomass to power projects in your county. There are many citizens in Mason, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties urging their politicians to do the same.

We intend to continue to oppose this "green rush" which would not be happening without the tax payer's subsidizing the building of such projects, in my opinion. Certainly in the case of the plant planned for Mason Co., Adage, LLC, I believe Duke (and AREVA) energy companies are also very interested in possible "carbon credits" from so-called sustainable, green biomass fuel to off-set their abysmal environmental record in the East. Such companies have deep pockets and can afford lawyers and scientists who will promote their point of view. And, these entities and their local supporters, can bring all sorts of pressure to bear. It is my hope that your constituents will make their support for the moratorium known, mitigating some of that pressure..

I have studied health abstracts done in recent years on the dreadful affects of inhaled particulate material, in particular, and industrial, and diesel emissions, in general. As is often the case, the very young and the vulnerable elderly are disproportionately affected by poor air quality. If you have any questions or interest in looking into this topic, I encourage you to begin with the American Lung Association and American Heart Association annual reports, available on their websites. There is no safe level of many of these emissions, and no filter known to man that can capture all of them.

Worth noting is that ...it has been postulated that if the biomass incinerators are allowed to be built and put into service, no local farm or gardener would be able to use the term 'organic' as applies to their produce due to the fall out from the incinerators. I wonder if TESC has considered this as I know, being a graduate of Evergreen, how proud they are of their organic garden and pro-environmental stance.

Thank you again, and please stand firm!

Yours truly,

Constance Simpson, RN

  1. As eloquent and concise a letter as I have read in the biomass opposition effort. Thank you, Connie. When you weigh the intellect and logic being utilized by opponents of biomass against the dogma and ignorance of proponents, it's little wonder why the biomass industry chose to curry the favor with those that they do.

  2. Connie, thank you for this calm, reasonable letter in support of the Thurston County Commissioners. I am sure they appreciate hearing from anyone who is behind their decision to do investigation before jumping in to a potentially devastating project.

  3. Thank You, Connie! Grandma's and Grandpa's can make a big difference in our community! Thank you for writing to Thurston County and expressing everything we all wish we could say to our own County!
Why does Thurston County CARE more about their citizens than our Mason County Commissioners? 'Tis a sad commentary on the types of people we have given our trust to!

  4. The links at the county website wouldn't work for me, so I called and was given this email address:

We need to become more vocal about asking for a moratorium and hearing from the people on this. Tim Sheldon, according to KMAS...stated that it would be illegal to stop a project once an application has been submitted and the review process begun. I believe that Thurston County was in the application process and review process and they stopped it. How could it be illegal in one county and not the other? Isn't it the purpose of the review process to stop SOME applicants anyway?
