Jack Miles Requests Moratorium on Biomass

(We really don't want to hear this)

1/4/11 Statement to the Mason County Commissioners

Submitted to Shelton Blog by Jack Miles

Good Morning Commissioners:

Today, I am here not only as a citizen of Mason County, but also as an elected representative.

Over the last year, many people have become concerned about the proposed ADAGE project coming to Mason County and leasing property from the Port of Shelton for its biomass plant.

Many months ago, I asked if we could put a moratorium on biomass facilities until we could learn more about its effects. When it comes to the health and safety of the community and people I represent, my concerns then are the same as my concerns now.

Recently, the Thurston County Board of Commissioners did just that, by signing Ordinance NO 1-4-4-4-9 adopting a moratorium on biomass facilities for 1 year. This 1 year moratorium will allow Thurston County to study land use and environmental issues related to biomass facilities in order to determine appropriate regulations. Because of the health and environmental concerns, additional investigations are essential regarding biomass facilities. We need to know more about how public health and safety will be impacted, and the long term effects it will have on the environment.

Therefore, I am requesting the Mason County Commission to take immediate action by placing a moratorium on biomass facilities in Mason County. I request that you create a special task force, and involve citizens of Mason County in a study of biomass power production and gasification in order to be able to create the appropriate regulations.

Commissioners, I believe adopting the moratorium is necessary for the preservation of the public health, safety and general welfare of the citizens of Mason County.

Thank You!

  1. Thank you Commissioner Miles! It is sad that we have only one politician in Mason County who is concerned with the health of the citizens, but at least you are brave and outspoken in your representation of the citizens.

How interesting that Commissioner ShelTon still believes it is illegal to have a moratorium; I wonder when they will put the Thurston County Commissioners in jail????

  2. What an excellent photo of the Board of County Comissioners.

Don't you just feel all warm and fuzzy when you see who represents us in matters concerning Mason County?

    I know I do!
