OCCUPY OLYMPIA DAY 2 PRESS UPDATE
From the Official Un-Official Occupy Olympia Media Committee
October 16, 2011
Occupy Olympia, in conjunction with the national Occupy movement, has moved into downtown Olympia's Heritage Park. The occupation in Olympia is just one of many in this far reaching movement that is attracting the attention of the world. Consensus based decisions about the direction of Olympia’s occupation are made at the general assembly meetings at noon and at 6:00 pm daily in the park.
Yesterday hundreds of people gathered at Sylvester Park to express their frustrations with the current state of affairs. Around 80 of them spent the night in the Park. Today the organization consensually agreed to move to Heritage Park, next to Capital Lake. Many in the group say that they will stay in the park until their grievances are resolved.
The group is all inclusive and allows anyone to voice their concerns through a structured consensus process. Although the park technically closes at night, Occupy Olympia has been allowed by State officials to camp, set up structures, access the public restrooms and otherwise occupy Heritage Park.
“Everyone is encouraged to join us and participate in whatever capacity they are able. If you don’t own a private jet, chances are you are also part of the 99%” -Matthew Hurt (Participant)
“The Occupation began on Wall St. but has spread and will continue to spread until the vast inequalities between the 1% and the 99% have been reconciled.” -Monte Katzenberger (Participant)Information about Occupy Olympia can be found at www.occupyolympia.org, and community members are encouraged to participate in an on-line forum discussion at forum.occupyolympia.org.
