WHO DOES THE PORT OF SHELTON SERVE?
Submitted to Shelton Blog by Katherine Price Mason County Progressive
How many lawyers does it take to represent the Port of Shelton? Inquiring minds want to know.
Let's recap: Skip Hauser is the Port's attorney at their public meetings; that makes one.
There was some other attorney with Skip Hauser at the Mason County Superior Court hearings in the Concerned Citizens of Mason County vs. Port of Shelton lawsuit, who I believe was also representing the Port. That makes two.
Last Monday night yet another lawyer showed up, at the City Commission Meeting, who identified himself as a lawyer for the Port of Shelton. Who was he; why does the Port of Shelton NEED so many lawyers; and why was last week's new lawyer unknown to the Port of Shelton Commissioner who was sitting next to me?
Could it be that the Port is so poorly run that they are constantly having to defend themselves in the legal arena from the very citizens who pay their salaries?
Could it be that the Port of Shelton is constantly taking positions that are, in fact, anti-citizen?
It is as if the Port believes it exists to serve business and industry, rather than the citizens whose tax dollars support the Port.
We need to stop spending our tax dollars defending the Port's pro-industry/anti-citizen position, and start spending our tax dollars on attracting businesses who will help improve our community.
A public disclosure request in connection with the attorneys fees paid out by the Port in the last twelve months could be enlightening!

The Commissioners don't care how MANY Lawyers they hire...
ReplyDeleteAfter all, folks, we citizens are the ones PAYING all the Lawyer Bills....
One more "Gotcha!"
This is one reason why the Port decided to assess we property owners, who live within the Port region, with an increased tax for 2011-12.
Another reason for more taxation is the Doubling of Payment for EDC "services" for the next 2-3 years. "Gotcha, again!!"
WOW!!
Public Disclosure Request sent to POS 4-19-11:
ReplyDeleteNames of all attorneys the Port of Shelton has received legal advice or legal representation from during the time period April 1, 2009, to April 1, 2011, together with copies of invoices received from any and all said attorneys used by the Port of Shelton during the above time period.
If providing copies of billing statements from law firms would disclose confidential Port of Shelton information, a summary of the total fees paid to each attorney during the time period above would satisfy this request.
This request SPECIFICALLY includes attorneys fees paid for or on behalf of Port Commissioner Jay Hupp and/or Executive Director, John Dobson.
