HB 1081 AND SB 5228 STILL IN COMMITTEE

THE BILLS CAN STILL BE STOPPED!!!

Submitted to Shelton Blog by Katherine Price Mason County Progressive

The provisions of SB 5228, if enacted, would include "the new construction of energy facilities and the reconstruction or enlargement of existing energy facilities...". Sounds like Simpson/Solomon would be all over themselves in the support of this legislation and the companion legislation, HB 1081, in the House of Representatives.

This legislation comes to us courtesy of 3 democrats and 2 republicans, Senator Adam Kline, 37th District, Democrat, Senator Phil Rockerfeller, 23rd District, Democrat, Senator Maralyn Chase, 32nd District, Democrat, Senator Jerome Delvin, 8th District, Republican, and Senator Jim Honeyford, 15th District, Republican.

At Section 5 of the legislation, appears this disturbing language: "(1) The council shall receive all applications for energy facility site certification".

So, there you have it, fellow air-breathers. The folks in Olympia are going to decide if the folks on the Peninsula get to keep breathing and whether the Evergreen State becomes the Everbrown State.

In a normal community, we would want to call our state senator to ask him to vote against the bill, and in favor of the authority of local government in these matters. How will Senator/Commissioner ShelTon vote? Will he vote to usurp the powers of the commission of which he is also a member, to satisfy the will of his corporate masters...? Is there any doubt?

Since it's not over until the fat lady sings, we should continue to do everything we can to defeat this legislation.

  1. Here's one response from Rep. Fred Finn: Thanks very much for your email and for letting me know what you think of HB 1081. I think the purpose of the legislation was to ”cut through red tape” for smaller projects and simplify the system. However, one persons red tape is another’s necessary process to hear all sides , particularly that of the local community. I am concerned about the provisions of this bill and did not sign on in support of it this year. HB 1081 is not in any of my committees, and therefore, I will not see this bill unless it passes out of its committee and onto the House floor for a vote. I will discuss this with my colleagues. I would urge you to share your thoughts on this bill with the chair of the Tech, Energy and Communications Committees in both the House and the Senate. I do not plan on supporting this bill at this time.
